Installation Instructions for

LJ-3005 Keylock™ Newel Post Fastener

1. Place the newel post in the desired location where adequate backing

is available. Draw a line around the newel post base. Set the Keylock

plate in center of the drawing and mark plate for inletting.

2. Inlet the plate 1/16" below the finished surface (stair tread, nosing,

etc.) with a router or chisel. Chisel out the keyhole hole area 1/4" to 3/8"

deeper, and wide enough for the lag bolt head to slide freely. Insert the

plate and fasten with the four screws. If the surface is cupped or warped,

belt sand to provide a flat surface.

3. Cut the newel post to the desired length. Plumb the post by cutting the

post base at angle to accommodate an un-level surface. Drill a 1/4" or

5/16" pilot hole by 4" deep in the bottom center of the newel post. With a

9/16" wrench, screw the lag bolt into the post to within 1/2" of the lag bolt

head. Wax the lag threads for ease of installation. Optional: Lag bolt may

be installed up to 1/2" off center in the bottom of the newel post.

4. Insert the lag bolt head into the Keylock plate. With a hammer and

block of wood (to protect post), drive the base of the newel post towards

the opposite end. As the lag bolt slides down the tapered slot, the post

will tighten. If the Keylock plate shows on either side, the lag bolt needs

to be loosened or tightened to conceal the Keylock plate.

5. If using with a ceramic tile or concrete floor, inlet the plate in the

bottom of the newel post and screw the lag bolt into the floor following

the above directions. Note: before drilling the 1/4" pilot hole in the floor

for the lag bolt, drill a 1/2" diameter clearance hole through the ceramic

tile. Note: a 3/8" concrete anchor may be substituted for the lag bolt in

concrete.

Tools needed: Electric drill with 1/4" or 5/16" and 1/8" or 3/16" wood drill

bits, wood chisel or router, hammer and phillips screwdriver.
